Fans of the Danish series Borgen surely delighted in seeing Knudsen engaged in some political scheming. There are also some riveting bits of acting in the premiere. But even as the threads tangle, there’s a fun Groundhog Day element to watching the same scenes play over and over in different permutations: notice how Marsden’s flirtatious “just trying to look chivalrous” at the open of the episode becomes his dying line later on. It’s a lot of characters and a lot of plot threads to trace. yet all have large roles and were added to the cast after the initial pilot was shot. All that and the show hasn’t even introduced Jimmi Simpson, Ben Barnes, and Clifton Collins Jr. On the human side, there’s Anthony Hopkins as the mad genius, Jeffrey Wright as his protégé, Shannon Woodward as his sidekick, Luke Hemsworth as security, Simon Quarterman’s game master, and the splendid Knudsen as management’s proxy. Sidse Babett Knudsen’s operations director sneers knowingly that the park’s guests just want to “shoot or fuck something” and, of course, the trouble that sparks off the series is the fact that the robots/victims are becoming aware as well.Īnd those are just the robots. Here are all the bloody, naked delights of Game of Thrones-but, don’t you see, the creators of this western world are aware of the nasty messages they’re enforcing. The first sexual assault occurs within the pilot’s first 15 minutes, and the first girl-on-girl kiss happens within the first 20.

In fact, all the sexualized nudity in the premiere-from the zonked-out robots to the writhing saloon girls-features female bodies. There’s a naked woman ( Evan Rachel Wood) in literally the first frame of the series. Many reviewers-including, most eloquently, Mo Ryan of Variety-have pointed out that in creating a show about a violent, sexy theme park told in part from the perspective of exterior “game-maker” characters, HBO is trying to have its cake and eat it too.
